How To Prepare Ghanaian Light Soup

Light soup in Ghana is served with fufu. However, some people will pair it with rice on a good day.

Light soup is one of the soups that has gained international recognition.

Light soup is prepared in at least 60 minutes.

In today’s blog, we will walk you through the making of light soup and also give you an idea of the ingredients used in preparing the best Ghanaian light soup.


Salt and pepper to taste

1 Tsp. shrimp powder

3 Green scotch bonnet peppers

3 red scotch bonnet peppers

2 habanero pepper

2 large tomatoes

1 teaspoon tomato paste

2 small onions

3 bay leaves



Chicken or any meat and fish of your choice


  1. Clean and wash the meat thoroughly, and set in a cooking pot. Combine the habanero pepper, one onions, ginger, garlic and blend to paste. Add 2 cups of water to the paste and strain into the meat in the pot.

2. Add a teaspoon of salt, bay leaves and one seasoning cube.

3. Steam the meat over medium-high heat for about 15 minutes covered. You can add more water it is getting dried.

4. In a separate pot, add 3 cups of water and steam the tomatoes and remaining onions. This is how-just wash the tomato onions and carrot throw them into a pot, add three cups of water and bring to boil. Let it boil for ten minutes then strain and blend with 2 cups of water, blend to paste.

5. Strain the blended mixture to the meat. Stir well to combine.

6. Add in the shrimp powder and season with salt to taste. Mix Well. Cover and simmer on medium-low heat for 5 minutes.

7. Wash and add the green peppers in whole. Let the soup simmer on medium heat for another 10 minutes. You can add more water if it is getting thick, it should be light.
